Your Patriot ancestor may be closer than you think
Membership in the Sons of the American Revolution begins with a documented family connection to a Patriot who supported the cause of American independence. That service may have taken many forms—not only military service.
If you believe you may have a Patriot ancestor—or even if you’re not sure—the Point of the Mountain Chapter can help you explore your family line, understand the requirements, and take the next step toward membership.
Who is eligible?
Membership in the Sons of the American Revolution is open to men who can document direct descent from an ancestor who provided qualifying service in support of American independence.
A Patriot did not necessarily have to fight in the Continental Army. Qualifying service can include military service, public service, signing an oath of allegiance, providing supplies or other material support, and other recognized forms of service to the cause of independence.

You may already have what you need
You don’t need to have your entire family history completed before you contact us. Start with what you already know and the records your family may already have.
- Birth, marriage, and death records
- Census records
- Family Bibles and other family records
- Obituaries and cemetery records
- Military and pension records
- Wills, probate, land, and other public records
- Documentation already gathered by other family members
The goal is to document the connection from you to your Patriot ancestor, one generation at a time. Our chapter can help you understand which records may be useful and where additional research may be needed.

Why join?
Discovering your connection to a Patriot is only the beginning. Membership gives you an opportunity to honor that Patriot’s service, preserve the history he helped create, serve your community, and share that heritage with future generations.
Your Patriot’s service is part of your inheritance. What you do with that inheritance is up to you.
